, senator harry reid use the hawthorne training accident to talk about sequestration on military readiness. >> it's just not appropriate, mr. president, that our military can't train and do the maintenance necessary. the men and women, our marines were trained in hawthorne. the sequester will cut it back. i just hope everyone understands. sacrifices made by the military. they are significant. >> marine official responded, "i don't know how anyone could link this accident to budget cuts. budget cuts would never cause marines to operate in unsafe conditions." reid communication director added the clarification, "the idea that senator reid thinks the hawthorne tragedy has anything to do with the sequester is absurd and unsubstantiateed by the remarks on the topic." the cause of the explosion is still under investigation. but the marine officials confirm that a 670-mim meter mortar round exploded prematurely inside the tube in a live fire exercise at awe thorn imminution depot -- ammunition depot. seven were killed, five immediately. the other two en route to hospital. they were flown to reno.
-- >> you know, harry reid a accused the sequester of killing the eight marines. this terrible the exercise, reid of all people should want to save money in the pentagon in order to put more money back in training which i may add that the marine corp denied, but the point is, you are up his alley, why is he not behind you on this? >> i agree, if we cannot cut something like that, how do we address the $17 trillion in debt. this is why the american people get so frustrated with washington, we continue to spend their taxpayer dollars on, we have spent $3 billion on this program, we will never gaet result that the troops can use and members of both parties said it's wasteful, it would have passed if i could have gotten a vote for it. >> i have a bit of time. is it possible? i know the obama charm offensive, i hope you are too. >> if we are not talking to each other, we will never do anything. >> senator, i'm interested in balancing the budget and in pro growth, corporate and business tax reform, can you tell me that that is going to be part of it? not just root canal without noracain, yes or n
. >> shepard: the majority leader harry reid says the senate will include expanded background checks for almost all gun sales. he says the assault weapons ban does not have enough votes to pass. lots of republicans oppose the ban and background checks saying they will punish only law abiding gun owners. new york state is changing its new assault weapons ban before it even takes effect. that law bans magazines that hold more than seven rounds of ammunition. the problem is seven round magazines don't exist. starting next month you will still be able to buy 10 round magazines in new york state. it will be illegal to load more than seven rounds at a time. no word on how they will enforce that hours ago in the ancient and holy stipulate of jerusalem president obama stood before the israeli people and made a strong and direct peace. he called for two state solution. told the israelis to put themselves in the palestinians who want to land a call of their own. he says if the israelis want peace they must not only demand of their politicians but work towards it themselves. the president spoke after a tr
. but this is a -- this defies a political solution as i think senator harry reid is finding out, in some ways simply because this is a geographical problem. sometimes even inside a state it is a geographical -- if you live in a city you tend to be much more for some gun control -- or further gun control. if you're in a rural area where guns are part of the culture, you're less inclined to do that. so it defies traditional politics in a lot of ways. certainly the white house wants to keep pushing it but there is a general agreement, at least right now, that there will not be -- that there will be some sort of response to newtown in a legislative form out of congress but it will probably not include an assault weapons ban. >> you had an exclusive interview with veterans affair secretary eric shinseki, one of the most critical issues he has to deal with is the backlog of claims at the va. >> the president's been very clear. veterans are a top priority with him and ending the backlog is foremost in his mind. he has made that very clear. no veteran should have to wait for claims as they are today. we have a fix
a spending problem for the president to say there is really no great urgency to balancing the budget or harry reid saying there is no rush too deal with entitlements this year. but for house democrat to double down on spending stupid by pushing more stupid spending, well, you got to wonder. but this is true, they want more stimulus about $200 million more, who can blame them, clearly none of their leaders are trying to stop them or remotely discourage them. and members of pear are not block -- of their party are not exactly blocking them. i don't think their intention was to encourage this. they run for a immediate nicotine spending rush any time they can get it, they d got it,n them for pushing it, it on us if we allow it david walker said stimulus is not the solution, he is so sick of watching washington dance around this issue. he alone withlice rivlin, head vice chair making this video to sort of get the message to young and older americans alike, the can kicks back. but you know we're just, still kicking the can, what is going on. >> it would be nice if we had a presidential budget, the
diane feinstein is going after assault weapons, but she's not going to get what she wants. as harry reid said, i'm looking at the reality of the thing. assault weapons ban will not pass. i will not bring it up. your thoughts? >> well, political reality has smacked even harry reid across the face here and it's going to be rather difficult, but i imagine that diane feinstein will find some way of partisan yoga to blame republicans for this instead of her senate majority leader. but she has doubled and tripled down now and she's talking about introducing the very kind of ammunition magazine ban that was just passed here in colorado. so they're not giving up. she hasn't over the last several decades. i think a what we're going to see is an even more hysterical campaign by the gun grabbers, by the michael bloombergs of the world, and the sarah brady campaign to demonize not harry reid. they're not going to be protesting at his office, but to marginalize the nra and second amendment supporters in this battle. >> steve: you're out in colorado and a couple of days ago we heard from a colorado sh
leader harry reid there, the senate's all-night vote a rama finally ended at 4:33 a.m. that takes us into the political playground. >>> ashley judd may have dropped a hint about the senate run for kentucky, dropped this friday. according to a cincinnati tv station, judd said her mother, country star naomi judd, cannot wait to turn her garage into campaign headquarters. >>> on bravo's "inside the actor studio," tina fey reviving her famed sarah palin impression. >> you know, jimmy, i believe that if everybody had guns, then there would be fewer guns in the stores. >>> and florida might spurn favorite sons, senator marco rubio and former governor jeb bush for none other than hillary clinton in 2016. a quinnipiac university poll the other day found floridians would support the former secretary of state and first lady 52-42% over senator rubio and 51-40% over former governor bush. hmm. >>> overwhelming american support for gun background checks. so, why is that not translating into overwhelming support on capitol hill? i'll talk to congressman jim hines next. >>> and great balls of fire.
